Antique Livery Button Set Eagle Bird Culleton Buckle Badge c1880 Crest Heraldry
An interesting heraldic livery button set, including 6 uniform buttons, two large belt buckles and two pronged badges. I have included images all round and with a tape measure. They are in good, used antique condition.
As you can see the raised wing bird is shown on all pieces. Thomas Culleton was one of the early promoters of crest collecting in the early 1860s, having his offices in 25 Cranbourn Street, London WC. As well as painting coats of arms and producing crested stationery, he created a range of crests, such as those used by the Army and Navy, the monograms and arms of the Royal Family and the French Emperor and nobility, the arms of every Duke and Marquis and every college in Oxford and Cambridge universities.In the 1890s, he began to strike medals, offer genealogical research, published his Culleton's Book of Family Crest and Mottoes and produced presentation addresses each of which contributed to the company's success. The business was taken over by his son, Leo, in 1887 and continued to flourish well into the 20th century.
